Cinder Conk plays an array of original and Balkan music, including the vibrant, colorful sound of Roma (Gypsy) folkdance, Yiddish and Eastern European culture, known for its haunting allure to even unfamiliar ears.

Cinder Conk plays music drawn from the Black Sea — the wellspring of Europe’s deepest and most diverse musical traditions. It is the sound of celebration and lament of those who have lived on its coast over thousands of years – Roma, Jews, peasants, and nationalists.

Cinder Conk weaves frenzied accordion riffs (Matthew Schreiber) with warm double bass counterpoint (Xar Adelberg) to create a sound that’s energetic, gripping, winsome and haunting. Although the core touring ensemble is a duo, sometimes they perform with the addition of violin (Ben Russell, Sarah Mueller) for a more layered sound.

Cinder Conk has shared the stage with Slavic Soul Party, Petar Ralchev’s “Live From Bulgaria” Ensemble, Beat Circus, Fishtank Ensemble, and Toughcats; played at Bates College (ME) and WDVX Blue Plate Special in Knoxville, played festivals including the sold out Free Range Music Festival and Downeast Folkdance Festival and Common Ground Fair in Maine, Balkan Night in Concord Mass, Laconia Multicultural Fest in NH, Oktoberfest in Bethelhem PA, BARBES and the Zlatne Uste Golden Festival in Brooklyn NY.

Their debut CD, Kukeri, was released in spring 2011 and features traditional Balkan and original music. They also have three tunes featured on a quad-split record, released in June 2011.
